Help/Capstone/Running a ministry

Set up a ministry’s email

The From, the relay account, and where refused messages come back to.

Capstone owns a ministry’s email settings and pushes them into the Mail service. Every receipt, invitation and campaign the ministry sends goes out through what is set here, so a mistake is silent and total.

  1. Turn Sending on.

Nothing goes out while it is off — which is also how you stop a ministry mid-campaign.

  2. Set the From address.

What people see, and what they reply to unless a Reply-To is set.

  3. Set the bounce address.

Where a refused message comes back to: a plain address, no name. Blank sends bounces to the relay account.

  4. Set the relay host, port and whether TLS starts immediately.

26 or 587 are submission ports and start plain before upgrading, so TLS-from-the-start is off for those. 465 is TLS from the first byte.

  5. Set the relay user and password.

The password is handed straight to the service and never kept here.

Tip

A second-tier customer with no settings of its own sends as its parent, sharing the parent’s relay. That is usually what you want and occasionally a surprise.

Watch out

Email that leaves cleanly can still be refused at the far end. Whether a ministry’s domain is set up to let this relay send on its behalf is a DNS matter, not a setting here.
